Ukrainian teachers complete three weeks of English instruction

SASKATOON – Ukrainian teachers has completed a three-week course on English as an Additional Language instruction at the University of Saskatchewan (USask).

The elementary and high school teachers are part of in Western Ukraine. They arrived in Saskatoon on March 3 to take part in course work and cultural activities facilitated by the College of Education to build English-language teaching capacity in Ukrainian schools.

Following their return to Ukraine, the educators will share their knowledge with pre-service English teachers training at Ternopil National Pedagogical University (TNPU). The program’s goals are aligned with Ukraine’s increasing emphasis on building English-language skills to accelerate European integration. The group returns to Ukraine on March 24.

Since 2013, USask and TNPU have established formal international partnership agreements to facilitate Ukrainian language study abroad initiatives through St. Thomas More College. On March 12, a renewed partnership was established between USask (College of Education), TNPU and STM through a Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony.

In addition to the College of Education and TNPU, the program’s sponsors include the Government of Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Advanced Education, USask International Office, USask Culinary Services, Ternopil Regional State Administration, Ternopil City Administration, Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage (STM), Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Saskatchewan, and the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood (Bishop Roborecki Branch).
