SASKATCHEWAN — Students at Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) pursuing a career in the trades will benefit from a $30,000 donation from Contractor Connection.
SIIT’s 10 Career Centres in Saskatchewan will be the primary beneficiaries of this donation. This is the second consecutive year this donation has been made to SIIT.
“The insurance and trade industry are entering into a critical phase where we all need to invest in the future for both these professions to ensure we have the unique skilled staff to rebuild homes, communities and business after insurance losses,” said Cortney Young, senior vice-president of Contractor Connection and Platforms Solutions at Crawford & Company Canada.
More than 4,000 clients and students in Saskatchewan are supported by SIIT Career Centres. Job coaches are available at each location to provide further development and career counselling, and to ensure users have the necessary skills to enter the workforce.
The donation made in 2023 helped purchase 29 computers that supported various students’ needs, including safety ticket completion, resume updating, online training, and job searching.
“SIIT Career Centres have a long history of connecting employers with skilled Indigenous tradespeople and these resources will impact clients' success by enabling solutions to a variety of obstacles they might encounter along the way,” said Lisa Shingoose, SIIT vice-president, Employment Development and Career Services.
“Tradespeople are in high demand across this country,” said Andrew Voroney, executive vice-president and chief operating officer of SGI CANADA. “When homes or property are damaged by storms, wildfire or anything else, we work with our partners at Contractor Connection to help people rebuild. And because SGI CANADA is a strong believer in diversity and inclusion, the students at SIIT are an ideal beneficiary of this donation. Women and Indigenous people working in the trades industry is something we proudly support.”
