MOOSEJAWTODAY.COM — Saskatchewan Polytechnic is offering a stand-alone course on grant and proposal writing that may be of interest to anyone working for local non-profit organizations. The course, Introduction to Grants and Proposals (BCOM-1803), will have three upcoming intakes and it’s open to everyone.
Ashley Dugan is a continuing education consultant with Sask. Polytechnic and will instruct the course.
This course will benefit “Individuals looking for information on grant and proposal writing or looking to gain some experience and practice on grant applications and requests for proposals,” she explained.
In the upcoming course, students will gain a practical understanding about funding applications that can be directly applied to their organization.
“Students will learn how to access funding for projects, as well as the fundamentals of researching, writing, and applying for funding to run programs,” Dugan explained.
The course has two learning outcomes: the first is to learn and define the elements of fund development, and the second is to learn how to apply for funding in a practical sense.
“Within (the first) learning outcome, students will break down key elements of fund development through an understanding of key terms that are used in a grant… the various ways an organization can raise funds… (and) also discuss the role of key players and partners… in the funding process,” said Dugan.
“The second learning outcome will be applying for funding applications,” she explained.
“(We) will break down the steps in writing a successful grant application and a request for a proposal (RFP). After reviewing the vital steps and requirements, we will then discuss how grant applications and RFPs are typically adjudicated by the funding committee,” Dugan added.
“And then lastly, (we will) identify potential funding opportunities that are here specifically in Saskatchewan,” said Dugan.
The course is offered in an asynchronous format, which means there are no set class times and students are offered flexibility in their routine. “Students can take the course at their own pace and at their own time…,” Dugan said.
Students can reach out whenever they have questions, and there’s no final exam. To conclude the course, students will hand in a simulated grant or RFP application and receive valuable feedback.
“It is a pass or fail course, so there is no numerical grade,” Dugan confirmed.
Dugan works with the School of Continuing Education at Sask. Polytechnic in Saskatoon.
“My (role) includes delivering programming within the School of Human Services and Community Safety, as well as the School of Hospitality and Tourism,” Dugan said. “Part of my role is to design, develop, and deliver credit and non-credit programming and services to meet the needs of businesses and industry.”

Tuition for the course is $365 and the digital textbook is purchased separately for $40.99.

The course will have three intakes: Oct. 16 – Nov. 15, 2023; Jan. 15 – Feb. 14, 2024; and Mar. 18 – Apr. 17, 2024.
“We’re just making sure we’re offering (this course) at multiple times throughout the year so if it doesn’t work for students, they can sign up at a time that works for them,” said Dugan.
Sask. Polytechnic teaches through applied learning courses across four campuses located in Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Regina, and Saskatoon.
Courses are available online and in-person, and programs focus on the economic and public sectors. Students are given the training necessary to develop critical thinking skills and can enrol in a certificate, diploma, or degree program.
