OpenAI's ChatGPT now includes a real-time web search feature, Browse with Bing, allowing the AI to pull current and cited information directly from the web. Initially available for Plus and Enterprise subscribers, a broader rollout is anticipated soon. This enhancement aligns ChatGPT with other platforms like Microsoft’s Bing Chat and Google’s Bard, which already provide live web information retrieval.

Despite the potential for initial complexity in navigation, the Browse with Bing feature stands as a valuable tool for information verification. Users can cross-check the sources cited by ChatGPT, ensuring the information's authenticity and guarding against misinformation.

This update follows a brief introduction of a similar feature in the ChatGPT iOS app in June, which was swiftly withdrawn. The current reintroduction is more structured, with OpenAI’s automated crawler clearly identifying itself. This transparency allows websites the option to opt-out from analysis by the AI, highlighting OpenAI’s commitment to ethical AI use and web platform choices.

To make it work, go to your settings (the bottom left three-dot menu by your picture), click "Settings & Beta," then "Beta Features," then toggle the "Browse with Bing" switch. Okay, it's not the best UX, but the feature is worth it. -s

P.S. ICYMI: Yesterday's Shelly Palmer LIVE is on YouTube. I talked about the WGA contract, did a hands-on demo of Google's Bard Extensions for Google Workspace (Google's version of Microsoft's Office 365 Copilot), talked about what I really think about my new iPhone 15 Pro Max, and much more. .
