REGINA - Play was disrupted unexpectedly at the Montana’s Brier Tuesday due to dripping coming from the Brandt Centre roof.
The issue emerged shortly after 11 a.m., over the ice surface where a game was in progress between Yukon Territory versus Newfoundland and Labrador. Play was stopped when water started falling onto the playing surface, apparently from the roof.
A bucket was placed on the ice surface to collect the water while Brandt Centre staff tried to address the problem.
REAL later issued the following statement explaining what had transpired:
“On March 5 at approximately 11:00 a.m. a drip was observed on to one of the Brier playing surfaces, resulting in a stoppage in play to investigate. REAL determined that a combination of interior building temp, combined with the cold outside air, was causing the development of condensation on a protruding apparatus connected to a roof antenna. The condensation thawed, and developed a small drip on to the ice surface below. The issue was rectified by adjusting the pipe position, and redirecting the accumulation of water to a collection point. Play resumed approximately 18 minutes later.
“REAL is in close and constant communication with the Brier ice making team to ensure the building temperatures and configurations provide optimum playing conditions.”
After the game resumed, Newfoundland and Labrador went on to win 6-5 in 11 ends.
