Blast from the Past: Two tanks and a small building lost in fire

The fire broke out nine miles north of Macklin at the Murphy oil site.

50 years ago

Macklin fire department was called out to the Murphy oil site, nine miles north. Two tanks and a small building were destroyed.

Dave Weidiman was appointed lumber manager of the Luseland Co-op Association.

At a peewee hockey tournament hosted by Wilkie Minor Hockey, individual trophies were given out to the best goalie, Robert Griffiths, Wilkie; the best defenceman, Ross Foster, Neilburg; and the most valuable player, Les Neilson, Wilkie.

John A. Stotts, Canada Post Office District Director in Saskatoon said, “Saskatchewan mailers are leaders in the use of the Canadian Postal Code.” Test done in January showed 57 per cent of mail sent in the province had a postal code on the envelope, compared to a national average of only 38 per cent.

20 years ago

“In an overwhelming show of support” at a Wilkie public meeting, the Prairie Springs Mineral Spa committee was encouraged to keep working. Chair Wally Lorenz said they would look at perhaps downscaling the size of the resort.

With Tim Lang deciding he would not re-open Ted Smith’s Service after the December fire, Dean Wildeman opened Unity Truck and Auto Service, bringing Craig Rennie, Mike Bazley and Wayne Martin with him. Another mechanic, Steve Marshall, started his own repair shop.

Wilkie Royal Purple celebrated their 25-year anniversary. Lady Georgina Salewski was recognized for 25 years of perfect attendance.
