Blast from the Past: Five St. George students gold medalists in badminton

50 years ago: Superior Foods Ltd. advertised pork roasts at 48 cents per pound and 99 cents for a one-pound package of coffee.

50 years ago

Unity Composite High School held their Honour Night. Receiving proficiency medals for being the outstanding students in their respective grades were Rita Barth, Grade 7; John Rutledge, Grade 8; Sophia Kondratowicz, Grade 9, Kathy Rutledge, Grade 10, Kathy Romanowski, Grade 11, and Rupert James, Grade 12.

Wilkie Air Cadet Squadron No. 399 held its annual ceremonial review. The squadron had an enrolment of 27 cadets. Receiving the Best 1st Year Cadet Award was LAC Michael Hamm. Sgt. S. Suchan received the marksmanship award, while WO2 B. Hyland was named Best All-Round Cadet.

Cantaloupe were 3 for $1, pork roasts were 48¢ a pound and Maxwell House coffee was 99¢ for a one-pound package, at Superior Foods Ltd. Customers were urged to bring in all empty pic-a-pop bottles for refund as Pic-A-Pop was being discontinued.

20 years ago

Nathan Kuhn of Reward won a Saskatchewan Weekly Newspaper Association’s Junior Citizen of the Year award, along with a $3,000 scholarship. It was noted that, with parents Tracy and Melody away, his successful efforts to keep eight brothers and sisters along with a couple of visiting friends, calm and getting vehicles under cover and livestock settled before the worst storm in decades hit, made his nomination stand out.

St. George School badminton players Danny Sittler, Derrick Wangler, Chris Cey, Candice Natske and Barrett Nielsen all brought back gold medals from districts.

Advertised prices for the Wilkie Kinsmen lobster supper were $25 for roast beef and lobster and $10 per person for roast beef only.
