Preliminary hearings are set for an Edmonton couple charged with weapons and drug-related offences by the Saskatchewan Roving Traffic Unit.

Manal Ali Fawaz, 25, and Garnett O’Connor, 23, were arrested Feb. 27 after the Maidstone RCMP traffic unit stopped their vehicle for going 64 kilometres an hour over the 110 km/hr speed limit on Hwy 16.

Police say they entered into a drug investigation after having verbal interactions with Fawaz and O’Connor during the vehicle stop. The two were arrested and police obtained a search warrant for the vehicle.

Hidden in the vehicle police found 3,700 single doses of crack cocaine in four vacuum-sealed bags. They also found a loaded handgun.

Both Fawaz and O’Connor were charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a firearm while prohibited, carrying a concealed weapon, and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

The two were released on bail in during a court appearance in April.

Preliminary hearings – held to determine if there is enough evidence to go to trial - are scheduled for both Fawaz and O’Connor in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Oct. 8.
