REGINA - The New Democrats have dominated the riding of Regina Northeast. However, in the last election for the constituency, the Saskatchewan Party came out on top. Now, the NDP, the Sask Party, the Saskatchewan Green Party and the Saskatchewan Progress Party are looking to claim the legislature seat.
The Sask Party and candidate Gary Grewal won the riding of Regina Northeast in 2020. Grewal announced in February that he would not seek re-election, meaning the Sask Party will go with a new candidate, Rahul Singh.
Singh, originally from New Delhi, has years of experience in management, including his current position as Territory Manager with the Parkland Corporation.
Singh studied finance at Vancouver Island University, obtaining a Master of Business Administration.
He also volunteers at food banks, participates in highway cleaning and sponsors children for education expenses.
While the Sask Party looks to repeat in the Regina Northeast constituency, the NDP seeks to reclaim the seat they’ve held for a long time, this time with candidate Jacqueline Roy.
Roy is a teacher and has served time as a councillor for the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STC). This will be the first time Roy has run in an election.
While Roy is a first-time candidate for Regina Northeast, Sask Green Party candidate for Regina Northeast, Anthony Majore, is making his second attempt to win the constituency.
In the 2020 election, Majore and the Sask Green Party received 1.8 per cent of the total votes.
Majore, Metis, is from Lebret, Saskatchewan. Majore worked as a steelworker for his career and retired from the job.
He is currently on the Queen City Eastview Community Association Inc. Board and likes to volunteer in his free time.
A surprising party running in Regina Northeast is the Saskatchewan Progress Party, formerly known as the Saskatchewan Liberal Party, which only has one candidate for the upcoming election, Katie Tremblay.
Trembly has a background in political science and obtained a post-secondary education in administration.
Other parties like the PC Party of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan United Party and Buffalo Party have not announced any candidates for Regina Northeast.
The provincial election is set for Oct. 28.
