SWIFT CURRENT — The provincial election on Oct. 28 will see four candidates vying for the MLA position in the Swift Current constituency. Incumbent Everet Hindley of the Saskatchewan Party faces challengers from the New Democratic Party (NDP), Buffalo Party and Saskatchewan Green Party.
Everett Hindley, Saskatchewan Party (Incumbent)
Hindley is seeking re-election after first being elected as the MLA for Swift Current in a 2018 by-election, and winning in 2020. Originally from a family farm near Melfort, Hindley moved to Swift Current in 1995 after graduating from the Western Academy Broadcasting College. He worked as a news announcer and color commentator for the Swift Current Broncos before entering politics. Hindley began his political career as a constituency assistant for former Premier Brad Wall and later served as Wall’s executive assistant until 2018. Hindley has served as the minister of health, with previous cabinet experience as minister of mental health and addictions, seniors, and rural and remote health.
Jay Kimball, NDP
Kimball is running for the NDP, bringing over 20 years of experience in Saskatchewan’s arts, culture and communities sector. Raised on a family farm near Rockglen, Kimball has worked as a consultant for SK Arts and managed the LIVE Arts program, focusing on cultural innovation. A resident of Swift Current, he is also a father of three. Kimball’s platform emphasizes equity, diversity, and inclusion, along with practical policies to improve the economy, protect the environment, and enhance essential services such as health care and education.
George Watson, Saskatchewan Green Party
Watson is the Green Party’s candidate for Swift Current, running for the second time after his initial candidacy in 2020. Watson, who grew up in Regina, is a psychosocial rehabilitation worker focusing on a housing first mandate and has also worked as a teaching assistant. Active in social and environmental causes, he has advocated for democratic rights and supported the inclusion of trans students in Saskatchewan schools.
Constance Maffenbeier, Buffalo Party
Maffenbeier is the Buffalo Party candidate for Swift Current. With a diverse career background, she currently resides on a cattle ranch in Guernsey. Originally from Alberta, Maffenbeier moved to Saskatchewan in 1967. She has worked in various roles, including construction, education and health care. Notably, she and her daughter were the first mother-daughter team to complete RCMP training together. Maffenbeier retired from the RCMP in 2014 after serving as a constable in various locations across Saskatchewan. Her platform emphasizes fiscal responsibility and a future free from debt, aiming to build a stronger and healthier province.
