Trial set for man accused of threatening bar patrons with shotgun, machete

Edwin Corrigal was denied bail and remains in custody.

BEAUVAL – Forty-year-old Edwin Corrigal of Prince Albert is headed to trial in July in Beauval Circuit Court for an incident at the Beauval bar.

Corrigal and 27-year-old Hubert Cardinal are accused of wearing masks and threatening bar patrons with a firearm and machete on Dec. 14, 2022. The incident wasn’t reported to police until Dec. 23, 2022. Police say there were no injuries reported.

Police identified the suspects as Corrigal and Cardinal. In January 2023, Beauval RCMP and Meadow Lake Crime Reduction Team located them.  They were believed to be at a home on the 200th block of Primrose East on the Canoe Lake Cree Nation. 

Police found Corrigal in the backyard and arrested him without incident. He had on his possession, a loaded sawed-off shot gun, machete, seven individual bags of crack cocaine hidden in a plastic egg container, approximately seven grams of crack cocaine wrapped in foil, approximately 11 grams of marijuana, and a sum of cash. Cardinal wasn't located at the time. 

Later that month, Meadow Lake RCMP went to the same home on Primrose East in Canoe Lake Cree Nation to locate Cardinal and noticed a black van that was seen at the residence at the time of Corrigal’s arrest. Officers activated their police lights and the van stopped. They found Cardinal hiding underneath blankets in the back of the van and arrested him. Two other occupants of the vehicle were released with no charges. Cardinal was additionally charged with attempting to take a weapon in possession of police officer, assaulting of a police officer, resisting arrest, and two count of failing to comply with a release order. 

On May 11, Cardinal was sentenced to 140 days for possession of a firearm without a license, 180 days concurrent for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, 180 days consecutive for assault causing bodily harm, 180 days, concurrent for attempting to take a weapon from a police officer, and 80 days concurrent for obstruction of a police officer.  

Corrigal is facing charges of possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a shotgun knowing the serial number is removed, possession of firearm while prohibited, possession of ammunition while prohibited, unsafe storage of a firearm, and possession of cocaine.

Corrigal was denied bail and remains in custody until his trial.
