SASKATOON – A 37-year-old man is accused of brandishing a machete when trying to flee from a store after allegedly stealing merchandise.

Jesse Reigh Squires was charged with robbery, carrying a weapon for the purpose of committing a crime, and carrying a concealed weapon. He appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court Thursday.

The charges stem from an incident on Oct. 4. Saskatoon police say they were called to a shopping centre in the 200 block of First Avenue Â鶹´«Ã½AV for a report of a robbery at about 5:10 p.m.

Security guards told police that a store employee had witnessed a man attempt to leave the store with unpaid merchandise. When the suspect was confronted, he showed a store employee the machete he had concealed on him. When security confronted him, he wielded the machete and fled from the shopping centre.

Shortly after the incident occurred, patrol officers located the suspect walking in the 200 block of Avenue C Â鶹´«Ã½AV. He was arrested without incident and a police found a concealed machete on him. He was also carrying the stolen merchandise, say police.
