SASKATOON – A trial for a man accused of making restricted firearms with a 3D printer is delayed until Sept. 23.
The trial for Norasinh Phouikhounephinith did start in Saskatoon Provincial Court in May 2023 but his defence had asked for an adjournment to discuss how his client would like to proceed.
In April 2023, defence had unsuccessfully challenged the validity of the search warrant. Saskatoon Police Service Guns & Gangs Unit had raided a home in the 200 block of 23rd Street East in January 2022 and seized several firearms, firearm parts and 3D printer components.
The Crown had asked the judge to hold a summary dismissal hearing, which is also known as a Vukelich hearing, to decide if defense’s request for a voir dire on the Charter motion should be denied.
The trial was scheduled to start back up in June 2023 but defence asked for another adjournment saying that there was a miscommunication between his client and himself and said that Phouikhounephinith was at a cabin “up north” and he can’t reach him.
Phouikhounephinith was arrested Jan. 26, 2022, after the Saskatoon Police Service Guns & Gangs Unit raided a home in the 200 block of 23rd Street East. Police seized several firearms, firearm parts and 3D printer components. He was granted bail in January 2022.
The charges against Phouikhounephinith haven’t been tested in court.
