REGINA – Who was Suspect Number Two? That question was answered this morning as Justice T. J. Keene read parts of his written decision in Regina Court of King’s Bench in the matter of Randall Allan McNab.
McNab faced a number of charges arising from a convenience store stick-up in 2021, being robbery, intent to commit an indictable offence with his face masked, use of an imitation firearm, carry a concealed weapon, and aggravated assault.
McNab entered pleas of not guilty to all counts, and a two-day trial was held at the end of June that listed a co-accused, their partner, and three RPS officers as Crown witnesses.
According to an agreed statement of facts, there were three men involved in a robbery at a convenience store on the 1200 block of 14th Avenue East on March 22, 2021. At 9:16 a.m. on that fateful morning, Shawn Geddes entered the store brandishing a firearm (which turned out to be a bb gun), demanding money and cigarettes from an employee behind the till. A second employee heard the commotion and stepped forward in an attempt to assist her co-worker.
Two other suspects entered - one a young offender at the time of the incident, and the other later confirmed as McNab.
The store employees armed themselves with nearby objects (a mop and a stool), but the female employee was struck in the face with a machete.
Geddes and McNab were able to flee, but had to hail a cab as the vehicle they arrived in was locked with the keys still in the ignition. Court heard the two men directed the driver to drop them off at a random house, where they went separate directions.
Geddes was arrested on April 6, 2021 and entered guilty pleas in court to charges of robbery and wearing a disguise on Dec. 17, 2021.
“He received three years for the robbery and one year concurrent for the disguise offence,” Justice Keene explained in his written decision. McNab was also arrested in April regarding the robbery, and the young person that rounded out the trio was arrested on scene.
McNab was found to be the elusive Suspect Number Two, as Justice Keene noted in his decision.
“The defence conceded that if the Crown was able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr. McNab was suspect number two, the third participant in the robbery, then on evidence; all the counts would have been proven,” he said. “I agree.”
Justice Keene found McNab guilty on all charges before him, rounding out today’s court appearance with finding a date to hand down a sentence.
Defence counsel R. Gregory Wilson requested a pre-sentence report, which Justice Keene ordered with an emphasis on Gladue factors.
McNab will continue to be remanded until the sentencing date on Oct. 24.
