SASKATOON – Joseph Thauberger has died in the Regional Psychiatric Centre in Saskatoon on Tuesday. He was 80 years old.

Since July 27, 2023, Thauberger was serving a life sentence in prison with no eligibility for parole for 10 years. He was convicted earlier this year of second-degree murder in the death of his brother Patrick Thauberger, in 1997.

Patrick Thauberger resided alone in Edmonton at the time and had travelled to Saskatchewan in the late summer of that year.

When Jospeh Thauberger took the stand in Regina Court of King’s Bench in June he told the court, “It occurred to me that if I tell anybody about this accident, I’m going to go to jail.

“If I reported the incident, there’s a 98 per cent chance that I would be convicted of murder and I would go to jail for many years, if not the rest of my life,” he told the court. “So I covered it up. I had no choice but to cover it up.”

Court heard that Patrick came to Joseph’s home that day to discuss business concerning farmland they owned together, then Joseph planned to give Patrick a ride to the bus station in order to catch his bus to Edmonton.

During closing arguments, Crown prosecutor Andrew Campbell told the court that his motive was preserving what he believed was rightfully his - farmland put into Patrick's name.

Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) says he died of natural causes but with all cases they will review the circumstances.
