Decision made in dangerous offender Mercredi breach

Police had warned public in March about accused being back in Regina.

REGINA – A dangerous offender will be spending more time behind bars.,

Louis Ted Mercredi, 40, appeared in Regina Provincial Court back on June 15, facing two charges of breaching a long-term supervision order.

At that time, he entered a guilty plea to one count - not to consume or purchase drugs unless it were prescribed medication. The Crown stayed the second count.

The breach occurred April 5, when Mercredi was attending a craft night event at the Oksana Centre where he was residing. He was allegedly intoxicated that evening, making inappropriate sexual comments to female staff.

Mercredi has a long history of alcohol-related offences and sexual assaults, which prompted police to issue a public advisory in late March.

In June, the Crown was asking for period of further incarceration of 15 months, while Legal Aid suggested a sentence of six to nine months in duration.

Judge Murray Hinds reserved his decision, which came down July 5. Judge Hinds sentenced Mercredi to one year in custody. With credit for time already served, that time is reduced to 294 days moving forward.
