Date set for coroner's inquest into Taniskishayinew death

Jury seeks to establish cause and manner of death, offer recommendations to prevent future deaths.

REGINA – A coroner’s inquest into the death of an inmate at the Regina Provincial Correctional Centre has been set for March 20 to 24.

Christopher Taniskishayinew, 39, was found unresponsive in his cell at RPCC on Aug. 16, 2020. Staff at the centre and EMS were not able to revive Taniskishayinew, and he was pronounced deceased.

Inquests are held if the coroner deems the death was not entirely from natural causes or could not be prevented. In addition to establishing the identity of the person who died, the proceedings seek the medical cause and manner of death. The assembled jury members can also make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.

The public inquest will begin at 10 a.m. on March 20 at the Holiday Inn and Suites on Prince of Wales Drive in Regina.
