REGINA – What caused the 2021 death of Ray Bitternose?
A public inquest beginning Sept. 18 in Regina hopes that, among other questions related to the man's death.
Back on July 6, 2021, RCMP received a call on the George Gordon First Nation about an armed man threatening to shoot people.
"Shortly after officers arrived, Bitternose, 42, was shot in an altercation with police," said a provincial government news release.
Officers on scene began first aid procedures, then taken over by EMS and STARS personnel. Despite lifesaving efforts, Bitternose succumbed to his injuries and was pronouced deceased.
The inquest is scheduled for Sept. 18-22, held at the Royal Hotel in Regina. The Saskatchewan Coroner's Service investigates all sudden and unexpected deaths with the purpose of the inquest to establish who, when and where the person died; the medical cause and manner of death. The jury can also make recommendations in order to prevent similar deaths from occuring in the future.
