PELICAN NARROWS – A convicted drug dealer has been handed jail time on drug trafficking and weapons charges.
Judge Mary McAuley sentenced Jaden Talen Wyatt Custer, 23, of Pelican Narrows, to three years and six months in prison. Custer was given 297 days credit for time served while on remand.
A trial was scheduled to be held in May but Custer ended up pleading guilty to several charges, including possession of a prohibited/restricted firearm without authorization, possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime, and failing to comply with a probation order.
After Custer’s guilty plea, Federal Crown Prosecutor Brent Slobodian withdrew four weapons-related charges, as well as one drug trafficking charge, and three breach of probation offences.
Custer was arrested by Pelican Narrows RCMP and La Ronge RCMP Crime Reduction Team (CRT) during a traffic stop when officers were conducting proactive patrols in Pelican Narrows on Oct. 23. 2023.
During the traffic stop, officers observed a loaded magazine in plain view in the vehicle. The three occupants of the vehicle were arrested. Two occupants of the vehicle were released without charge.
When police searched Custer and the vehicle, they found a sawed-off firearm, approximately 21 grams of suspected methamphetamine, three grams of suspected cocaine, a sum of cash, and drug trafficking paraphernalia.
