Case against woman charged three years ago drags out in court

Tori Sutherland is charged with abducting a baby, break and enter, assault and breaching release conditions.

MELFORT – The case against a woman arrested in December 2020 for allegedly abducting a baby continues to drag out in court.

Tori Sutherland had another appearance scheduled on Dec. 12 in Nipawin Circuit Court and the matter was adjourned to Dec. 20.

She is charged with abduction of a child under 14, break and enter, commit the indictable offence of abduction and assault, and breach of a release order.

The charges stem from Nov. 14, 2020. Wakaw RCMP had received a report of several disturbances on One Arrow First Nation. During one of the disturbances, a woman entered a home uninvited, assaulted another woman in the home, and then left with the woman’s four-month-old son.

About 45 minutes later, the child was located unharmed by his mother at a second home on One Arrow First Nation. Police say Sutherland had left the home by the time the child was located.

No weapons were seen or used during the incidents, say police.

Police located and stopped a suspect vehicle about an hour later on One Arrow First Nation. A man and woman were in the vehicle but Sutherland wasn’t.

RCMP issued an arrest warrant for Sutherland’s arrest. She was 26 at the time.

More than a month later, Sutherland was arrested by Wakaw RCMP, witih help from Rosthern RCMP on Dec. 31, 2020.
