Carrot River RCMP charge man after serious assault and robbery

Police say a man had assaulted a victim and stole his vehicle. The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

CARROT RIVER – A 26-year-old man was arrested following a serious assault on Red Earth Cree Nation.

Austin McGillivary from Cumberland House is charged with robbery, aggravated assault, theft of a credit card, flight from police, resisting/obstructing a peace officer, driving while impaired, and driving while prohibited. He appeared in Melfort Provincial Court on Oct. 26.

Carrot River RCMP say that at about 12:50 p.m. on Oct. 24, they got a report of a robbery on Red Earth Cree Nation. Their investigation determined that a man had assaulted a victim and stole his vehicle. The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police started patrols right away to find the stolen vehicle and it was spotted on Highway 123 headed towards Cumberland House. Officers from Cumberland House RCMP tried to stop the vehicle but the driver refused to stop.  

Police set up a tire deflation device and the stolen truck was disabled. McGillivary ran from the vehicle but officers arrested him a short distance away, say police.
