SASKATOON – A woman charged with first-degree murder – who was granted bail – is back behind bars after breaching court orders.

On Tuesday, Jannay Blackbird, now 34, was sentenced to 30 days in jail for breaching her release conditions. She appeared by CCTV from Pine Grove Correctional Centre. Court heard that her breaches included breaking her curfew, and not reporting to her probation officer. She had been residing in Saskatoon.

In April 2021, Blackbird was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Damian Moosomin of North Battleford. Her charges were upgraded to first-degree murder. In December 2021, she was released on bail after a show cause hearing in Battleford Court of Queen's Bench.

Blackbird’s lawyer, Nicholas Stooshinoff, told the court that as a part of her release conditions, she is banned from North Battleford and Saulteaus First Nation and being away from the support system of her family has caused her hardship. RCMP say that Blackbird is from Saulteaux First Nation.

Blackbird is back in Battleford Court of King’s Bench in December to face her first-degree murder charge.

Moosomin’s body was found in the 1500 block of 105 Street in North Battleford on May 16, 2020. He was reported missing to police on May 11, 2020.
