YORKTON - The ‘Love Bus’ service in Yorkton received a boost Thursday with a dual donation.
The donation was $1,000 from the local Kinsmen Club, one of several cash donations being made in response to a food drive being undertaken by Yorkton Hyundai.
“It’s really big,” said bus volunteer Marilyn Lutz who accepted the cheque. “We were negative (in the red on operations).”
Ron Hanishewsky, president of the Kinsmen said the club saw the donation as a timely one.
“We looked at the time of year . . . (and) we know there is a need for this kind of thing around the holidays,” he said.
And, it is just another way the service club “gives back to the community,” he added.
Kimberly Hamilton, general sales manager with Hyundai Yorkton said they actually recognized the need of the ‘Love Bus’ last holiday season. Recognizing the need it was a natural to develop a program this year to help out.
“It really is an incredible program that they run,” said Hamilton.
Hamilton said local business support has been outstanding with food from Westland Insurance, Mulder Farms, Lakeview Insurance, K&M Auto Care and Classic Paintless Dent Repair. Monetary donations have come in from Yorkton Auction Center, Remax Blue Chip Realty and Oak & Olive Beauty Co.
Operated by Love Lives Here Yorkton the bus delivers food and other items to those needing some help in the city each Friday, explained Lutz. There is if course a cost to operating the service, from stocking items to hand out, to fuel and maintenance of the bus.
And, of course they need volunteers to operate the bus too.
