YORKTON - The Yorkton Venom 16U Volleyball team accomplished a huge feat in Warman the weekend of Feb 28 - March 1.
They were able to bring home a silver medal from a Sask Cup Tournament. The Saskatchewan Volleyball Association hosts SaskCup tournaments which draw teams from across the entire province. This particular tournament consisted of 50 teams.
Yorkton Venom went into this tournament with a ninth overall ranking. The team had set out with a goal of reaching top-seven.
The girls finished with a 2-2 record after round robin play. After this, they were matched up against Prince Albert to fight to keep their spot in top 10. They successfully beat Prince Albert and were able to advance to the Division 1 Playoffs.
Yorkton Venom played some of their best ball during playoffs. They were able to pull off wins against some of the strongest teams in the province and secure themselves a spot in the gold medal match against Regina QCVC.
It was an extremely close game in the final and the team was more than happy with a second place finish at such a competitive tournament.
This 16U team has had plenty of success this season having won medals at three of the four tournaments they have attended. They won gold at their home tournament (10 teams), gold in Brandon, Man. (24 teams) and now a silver medal at SaskCup 2 (50 teams).
The team consists of 10 athletes from Yorkton and surrounding area.
The next tournament for Yorkton Venom will be in Virden, Man., March 15-16.
