Yorkton Terriers lead in SJHL Viterra Division tightens

The Terriers are on the road for their next game heading north to face Melfort Saturday, then they head home to host Battlefords at the Westland Insurance arena for a 3 p.m. start Sunday.

YORKTON - And now the lead is a mere one point.

A win over the visiting Yorkton Terriers by the Red Wings in Weyburn Wednesday have tightened things in the SJHL Viterra Division. The Terriers are still atop the SJHL Viterra Division with 43 points, but the Wings are hot-on-their-heels with 42 after the 7-4 win.

The Wings started things Wednesday as Jaxson Ruthven scored the only goal of the opening frame, a powerplay marker at the 8:11 mark.

The Terriers tied things 1-1 early in the second period when Keenan Ingram scored only 1:08 into the middle stanza. It was the first of a busy period in terms of pucks finding the twine.

Ruthven, Blake Betson and Liam Fitzgerald scored a run of three for the Wings and the home side was up 4-1.

A powerplay marker by Jeff Hammond at 16:47 drew the Terriers closer, but Cyprus Smith-Davis responded for the Wings at 18:57 and Weyburn carried a 5-2 lead to the dressing room after 40-minutes of play.

The third saw the teams trading goals until the final buzzer.

Tyler Palin scored for the Terriers at 4:21.

Luke Dekay got that one back for the Wings at 9:08.

Ingram scored his second of the contest for Yorkton at 16:28.

Then Ruthven finished things with a powerplay goal at 19:11 to complete a hat trick and round out the 7-4 contest.

Callum Creig was in the Terrier net facing 35-shots in the loss.

Yorkton fired 45-shots at winning netminder Angelo Zol.
