YORKTON – The 38 Canadian Brigade Group’s Artillery Tactical Group held an open house at the Yorkton Armoury April 6.
The open house was part of a recruiting effort by the Canadian Army for their National Job Fair during the month of April and gave potential recruits a chance to tour the armoury and ask questions as well as preview the artillery.
On display were a C7 service rifle, a C9 machine gun a C3 Howitzer field artillery weapon.
"Being an artillery unit — we're the only ones besides our sister battery in Regina ... that will work on that Howitzer and use that Howitzer day-to-day," told Sgt. Zane Vanderhulst, in an interview with SASKTODAY.ca, noting some of the training is done in a virtual gunnery at the armoury.
"The actual hands on gun drill can't be done without an actual gun here," added Vanderhulst.
As for joining the Reserve Force, Vanderhulst said, "it's a great part time job for high school students or someone that doesn't really know what they want to do yet."
"It's a good way to get your foot in the door. It looks great on a resume," said Vanderhulst, noting he was 17-years-old and still in high school when he joined.
"Anyone that's looking to get into the regular force as a high school student now ... if you want to see what it's about first — join the reserves — and we can help you get into the reg force later on," said Vanderhulst, adding, "a lot of reserve force members from this battery have gone regular force."
