The Meeple Guild: Deck Deals #5 - Battlefield Cribbage falls short

There are dozens of card games we might have reviewed here which are better, but knowing the broad interest in cribbage we just had to offer up this one even though it fell short for us.

YORKTON - There are card games one will try that you just want to love.

Battlefield Cribbage created in 2006 by Shane Murphy is one of those games largely because I personally love cribbage and have enjoyed a number of its variants, such as Crib Wars, Kings Cribbage, CrossCribb, Chicago Cribbage and Round the Bases: Major League Cribbage.

I wanted Battlefield Cribbage to be among those variants I have greatly enjoyed – but alas this one just fell flat.

“Battlefield Cribbage [BFC] is a variation of cribbage that preserves the purity of cribbage while requiring new levels of strategy and skill. The cards are played openly where each player can see the field of play and make strategic moves, like a commander on a battlefield. It is a game that will amaze you with the depth of play leaving less up to luck and more up to strategy,” notes battlefieldcribbage.com

Sadly the ‘feeling’ of being a commander on the battlefield is not even remotely felt.

And the interesting idea of playing with cards face up, never really gets past a good idea and into an actual good in-game feature.

This is a cribbage variant that held promise, but it just went unfulfilled. It was such initially we felt we must be missing something and believe me we have read the extensive rules on the website more than a few times, but have not found where we missed something which could lift this game even to the level of mediocrity.
