YORKTON – The St. Alphonsus school School Community Council hosted their Year End Barbecue June 14 to raise funds for a new playground.
"We do it every year — it's kind of nice to get back to it — last year was the first year we were able to host since COVID," said Mike Cristo, Principal of St. Alphonsus.
The SCC supplied burgers, hot dogs and a full topping bar for attendees to take advantage of.
"One of the main things that we've been funding over the last couple of years is a new playground," said Cristo, adding, "a lot of [the SCC's] efforts have gone towards that."
Cristo said the efforts have helped the school raise about half of what they need for the new structure.
"We've managed to put a deposit down on the structure that we want," said Cristo, "with the fundraising that we've done and the grant that came from CTTCS — we're about halfway there," noting the final cost is between $110,000–$120,000.
Sask. Environment and Resource Management as well as Parkland Search and Rescue were present at the event to offer information and survival tips with employees of Royal Ford and Royal Honda volunteering their time at the grill.
