YORKTON — The Senior Mobility Program run by SIGN (Society for the Involvement of Good Neighbours) has acquired a new vehicle.

The announcement for SIGN's new senior mobility vehicle was held at the organization's North Stree location, March 24. The program, which has been serving seniors in Yorkton since the 1970s, continues to help older adults access essential services and engage with their community.

“We received a $20,000 financial contribution from the Kinsmen Club which equals 50 per cent of the total cost for a new vehicle,” said Andrew Sedley, Chief Executive Officer of SIGN.

Sedley said that the need for a new vehicle arose when their previous senior mobility car broke down. The repair costs would have amounted to half the price of a replacement.

Sedley recounted how the organization reached out to local community groups for support.

“We decided to approach local community organizations—clubs that could support us—and went to the Kinsmen. What we had said was any money at all possible would help us out,”  said Sedley.

Sedley said he was "blown away" when Yorkton Kinsmen President Ron Hanishewsky committed to covering 50 per cent of the cost.

“With this contribution, we can ensure that we can do this for many years to come,” added Sedley.

The Senior Mobility Program provides affordable transportation for individuals over the age of 55 who are not wheelchair-bound. Its services include helping seniors access medical appointments, banking, grocery shopping, and other vital activities. The program plays a crucial role in combating social isolation, which often affects seniors without nearby family support.

Hanishewsky emphasized the importance of the program for the community.

“We know how important the SIGN program and the senior mobility vehicle is in the community for those people that need some getting around whether it be to appointments or events that are going on,” said Hanishewsky.

The Kinsmen Club has been involved in supporting the program since its inception.

“When they came and were in need of a new vehicle we saw it as a great need for serving the community and for us it was an opportunity to partner up,” added Hanishewsky.

SIGN ensures the program remains accessible through financial support from various sources, including donations, fundraising, and municipal and provincial support. Fees for rides cover approximately one-third of the program's cost. Ride fees are $8.50 for one person one way, $11.00 for two people, and $14.00 for three, with an additional $4.00 per five-minute stop.

SIGN’s Senior Mobility Program ensures seniors maintain their independence and connection to the community.
