Lena Yacyshyn of Yorkton, SK passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre at the age of 84 years. Lena was born on the family farm near Playmore, SK on April 14, 1929. She was one of 17 children born to Alex and Polly (nee: Klewchuk) Marchuk. She went to Doyle School where the children had to walk 1 3/4 miles to school in the morning and home, then had to help with chores at home. After completing Grade 10, Lena left school and went to work in Pelly, SK at the hotel and theatre. It was there Lena met Tom Yacyshyn and they were united in marriage on February 23, 1949. They were blessed with five children. Lena mostly raised the children herself as her husband worked on construction as a Millwright and was away from home three to four months at a time. The couple then moved to Churchbridge where Lena worked at the Hotel and at Mary's Café. When Lena moved to Yorkton she gained employment at the Yorkton Hotel as a bar tender and also at Denny's Bakery and the Gladstone Inn. Eventually she gave that up all those jobs, and started a care home where she looked after psychiatric patients. She provided round the clock care and in 1996 Lena finally retired. By then she had been blessed with grandchildren, whom she lovingly cared for as long as she was able. Lena's hobbies were crocheting, knitting and gardening - she loved flowers. Neighbours would often stop by to tell her how beautiful her yard and gardens looked. Lena leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her life, her daughter, Yvonne (Alvin) Dyer of Calgary, AB, her daughter, Deborah (Larry) Demers of Combs, BC; her son, Dwayne (Brenda Buchanan) Yacyshyn of Craven, SK; her daughter, Yvette Yacyshyn of Yorkton, SK and her son, Dwight (Maryann) Yacyshyn of Yorkton, SK; five grandchildren, Noel, Adrianna and Nicole of Calgary, AB, Serge, Cody and Mitchell of Yorkton, SK and one great grandchild Chloe of Calgary, AB; her two sisters, Pauline Wlasichuk and Marion Bainbridge; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and dear friends. A Memorial Service was held on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 from the Chapel of Christie's Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Reverend Luanne Hrywkiw officiating. The organist, Judy Berg, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art". The Honourary Pallbearers were Lena's grandchildren, Noel Dyer, Nicole Dyer, Cody Yacyshyn and Mitchell Yacyshyn and her great-grandchild, Chloe Dyer. The Urn Bearer was her grandson, Serge Yacyshyn. A private family cremation committal will take place at a later date. Rest in Peace Lena, God will take care of you.
