Shirley Westerhaug passed away peacefully with her loving daughter by her side, Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, SK. She was 69 years of age. Shirley Ellen was born on August 7, 1944 in Yorkton, SK, the oldest of three girls born to Johnny and Mary (nee Simair) Quinton. Shirley started school in Jedburgh, SK and finished her Grades 11 and 12 in Ituna, SK. Shirley continued her education in Yorkton, SK to become a Registered Nurse. Her career spanned over 40 years, beginning at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre and ending and spending the majority of her time at the Theodore Health Centre maintaining a permanent position from 1966 to 2005, followed by a casual position until 2007. Shirley met the love of her life, Allan Westerhaug when she was in Grade 12. They courted all through the years that Shirley was in nursing school and were married in Theodore on October 29, 1966. They began their married life on Shirley's parents' farm. They moved for a short time into Yorkton but their love for the farm life brought them back to Shirley's beloved "Sunnyside Farm". Allan and Shirley were blessed with the birth of their only child, Tanis in 1979. Shirley was a true country girl and took great pride in her yard and garden. In the summer and fall, she was always busy putting up preserves, canning and freezing fruit and vegetables. Shirley was very community minded and over the years she served as a volunteer for the Sunrise Health Region, delivered Meals on Wheels, and was a "Perogy Pincher". She was also an active member of the Theodore Housing Authority Board, the Theodore United Church Board and the Guest Cemetery Committee. Her hobbies were varied - Shirley enjoyed embroidery, listening to the radio, coin collecting, holidaying and finding any kind of sale. She loved animals and visiting with friends but most of all loved her family, especially her grandsons, Conor who was born in 2008 and Tagon who was born in 2011. The boys were her pride and joy, and Shirley was looking forward to becoming a Gramma again in November of this year. Shirley was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Allan in 2008; her parents, Johnny and Mary Quinton and two brothers-in-law, Wilfred Kovalench and Clarence Westerhaug, Jr. She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory her daughter and son-in-law, Tanis and Ryan Ferguson of Jedburgh, SK as well as their two boys, Conor and Tagon and one soon-to be new grandbaby in November; two sisters, Sharon Kovalench of Theodore, SK and Glenda Kitzan of Saskatoon, SK; one sister-in-law, Sophie Westerhaug of Yorkton; two brothers-in-law, Carl (Annetta) Westerhaug of Theodore, SK and Barry (Marian) Westerhaug of Edmonton, AB plus numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Funeral Services were held on Friday, August 23, 2013 from the Theodore Rec Centre in Theodore, SK with Reverend Faye Greer officiating. Shirley's daughter, Tanis wrote words of tribute and eulogy that were read by Kathy Novak. The pianists, Arlene Fenske and Thelma Gillis, led the congregation and members of the Theodore United Church Choir in the singing of the hymns, "In The Garden", "Those Hearts That We Have Treasured" and "Beyond the Sunset" The Choir Anthem was "Only Remembered". The ushers were Wendy Quinton and Brenda Rosenmeyer. The Interment Service followed in the Guest Cemetery near Theodore, SK with Jo Johnson, Chris Hanson, Blair Nelson, Barclay Westerhaug, Eugene Westerhaug and Wayne Ferguson serving as the casket bearers.
