WASELENCHUK - Stan

Posted

Stan Waselenchuk

Stan Waselenchuk was born on April 14, 1927 in the Jedburgh district, to Jerry and Annie (Polegi) Waselenchuk. His only sibling was his sister, Minnie, who was four years older. Stan attended Rocky Dell School, where he was an excellent student, completing grade 10 by the age of 14; however, he chose to leave school to help on the family farm at that time. Stan loved all sports, but especially baseball and hockey. He played hockey for many years with the Jedburgh Eagles and later coached the Jedburgh Jets in the Bates Hockey League. It was one day while skating at the outdoor rink in Jedburgh that he noticed a pretty, young girl pretending to have trouble tying her skate laces. Dad skated over to help and we all know the rest. Stan and Olga were married on June 6, 1952. When Stan's father, Jerry passed away in 1955, they took over the family farm, growing grain and raising cattle. Stan was one of the first to get into the exotic breeds of cattle, raising Simmentals. Stan and Olga were blessed with five children, Wes, Bonnie, Wayne, Wendy and Jeff. Stan and Olga loved to watch the kids play sports and drove all over the province to watch them competing in tournaments and sports days. But many Saturday nights were spent dancing - Stan and Olga and their dancing buddies would sometimes drive two hours or more to attend a dance if their favourite band was playing. Stan loved music and could carry a tune, although the musical gene stopped there. Stan and Olga retired to Yorkton in 1997 where they enjoyed their new house and yard.  When Olga passed away in April 2012, Stan continued to look after himself and maintain the house, although he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, which then spread to his bones. He underwent many chemotherapy treatments in Regina and always was optimistic and willing to try anything to beat the disease. In November 2014, he moved to Aspen Bluff Villa Care Home. There, he enjoyed the food, company and activities, until health issues and lack of mobility forced him to be hospitalized in late January of this year. He was transferred to Jowsey House Palliative Care in early March, and passed away last Thursday morning with his family by his side. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the care givers at Aspen Bluff, the hospital and Jowsey House for their kind and compassionate care. Stan was predeceased by his father Jerry in 1955, sister Minnie in 1962, mother Annie in 2000, his wife of almost sixty years, Olga, in 2012, and his granddaughter Clancy in December 2015. He is survived by his son Wes of Coquitlam and his children Brooklynn, Wyatt (Kinley) and Rhett; his daughter Bonnie (Pat) McGerrigle of Yorkton, and their children Shaylyn (Jay) McKechnie and Kellen; son Wayne of Winnipeg; daughter Wendy (Bruce) Evans of Calgary and their children Cassandra, Kaitlin (Tyler) and Ben and son Jeff (Lisa) of St. Albert and their children Seth and Quinn.  Also brothers-in-law Ed (Geri) of Summerland and Ron (Bev) of Jedburgh as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 from the Chapel of Christie's Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Reverend Deborah Smith of Westview United Church officiating. Words of tribute and eulogy were shared by Jeff, Seth and Quinn Waselenchuk and Wes and Wyatt Waselenchuk. Gordon Jackson played a violin recessional. Following a luncheon in the Gunn Reception Room at Christie's Funeral Home, the Interment Service followed in the Yorkton Memorial Gardens, Garden of St. Mark with grandchildren, Shaylyn, Brooklyn, Wyatt, Rhett, Cassandra, Kaitlin, Ben, Seth and Quinn serving as the casket bearers. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie's Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.
