Jacob Trost was born on August 25, 1922 in Saxony, Germany to Gustav and Katharina (Kaufman) Trost, and passed away peacefully in the early hours of April 14, 2014 at the Invermay Health Centre, Invermay, SK. Jacob had been a resident at the Invermay Health Centre for just three weeks, waiting for permanent residency at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home. Jacob was the sixth of nine children born to Gustav and Katharina. In 1927, at the age of five, he immigrated to Canada with his parents and seven siblings. They arrived in Halifax on March 15, 1928. His last sibling, John, was born in Canada. They took a very long train ride from Halifax to the Phone Hill district of Saskatchewan. Jacob's father rented land and later purchased land around Phone Hill. Jacob attended school at Stoney-Couley and Phone Hill and completed grade 8 at which time he made the decision to help his father on the farm. On November 3, 1948 Jacob was united in marriage to Filbi Kettner of Minnitonas, MB. Jacob and Filbi purchased farm land a couple of miles away from his parents, where they raised their first three children; Darleen, David and Clarence. In 1962 Jacob and Filbi and their three kids moved to Yorkton and purchased a home on James Avenue. A couple of years later, the twins, Rachel and Randy were born to Jacob and Filbi; completing their family. Jacob continued to go out to the farm on a weekly basis, even until just a few months before his passing. Jacob accepted the Lord as his personal Saviour at an early age. He was a life-long member of Central Baptist church and later Heritage Baptist church. He faithfully attended church until weeks before his passing, when he was no longer able to. Jacob was an active member of his church; participating for many years as a deacon, trustee and custodian. In later years; attending Calebs senior group at church, was a highlight of his week. If there was activity and food involved, you were sure to see Jacob there. Jacob loved to play crokinole and shuffleboard; and spent many hours playing with family and friends. Jacob was in many shuffleboard tournaments at Queen Elizabeth Court. He truly enjoyed spending time around a campfire, tending the fire on his many camping trips with his daughter, Darleen and son-in-law, Elmer. He built many 'huge' bonfires at the farm and entertained family and friends with his boy scout fire skills. Since 1987, when Jacob and Filbi retired from farming; they loved to spend their winter months in Florida and Texas where they established many wonderful friendships. Jacob and Filbi celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in December, 1998; when they had the joy of having their entire family home for Christmas and the anniversary celebration. Jacob was predeceased by his loving wife, Filbi in 1999; by his parents; Gustav and Katharina Trost; his brothers, Christian, Gustav and Johnny; and sisters, Tillie, Sophie and Olga. He leaves to cherish his memory two siblings; Toby of Mississauga, ON and Rosa of Yorkton, SK. He will be lovingly remembered by his five children and their families, Darleen (Elmer) Aichele of Chilliwack, BC; David (Dorothy) Trost and their sons, Eric and Philip of Burlington, ON; Clarence (Angela) Trost and their son, Kevin of Beamsville, ON and their daughter, Kelly (fiancé, Andrew) of St. Catherines, ON; Rachel (Lyle) Griffin and their daughters, Andrea and Brittany of Yorkton, SK; and Randy (Lori) Trost and their sons, Gavin and Logan and daughter, Amy of Yorkton, SK. Funeral Services took place on Monday, April 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Christie's Funeral Home with Pastor Brian Kirsch of Heritage Baptist Church officiating. Family friend and organist, Joyce Paul led the congregation in the singing of the hymn, "Great Is Thy Faithfulness". Lyle Griffin gave tribute to his father-in-law in eulogy; Jacob's daughter-in-law, Lori Trost shared special music; grandson, Gavin Trost shared a photo tribute; and others in Jacob's family gave tributes. The Interment Service took place at the Yorkton City Cemetery with Andrea Griffin, Brittany Griffin, Amy Trost, Gavin Trost and Logan Trost serving as casket bearers while Kelly Trost, Kevin Trost, Eric Trost and Philip Trost served as Honourary Pallbearers.
