With sadness, the family of Rae Thompson announce his sudden passing on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was 77 years of age. Rae Isaac Leslie Thompson was born on April 1, 1936 in the Saltcoats District of SK, the son of Matthew and Marion (nee McFarlane) Thompson. Rae attended school at Perley and Cut Arm Schools. He farmed with his Dad and brother, Bob until starting what he considered to be his first "real job" with Thomas Alliance in Winnipeg, MB as a Welder's Helper. Rae also delivered parcel mail in Calgary, AB before gaining employment with two different seismic companies, Century Geophysical and Beaver Geophysical. His position was as a "shooter" - the explosives expert in charge of setting up and setting off the charges. Rae worked and travelled through northern Alberta, British Columbia and the Yukon. Rae bought his own land in the municipality of Saltcoats and farmed until 2003. While farming, Rae was a Councillor for Division #2, R.M. of Saltcoats from 1977 - 1995. Rae always enjoyed the beauties of nature, the wildlife, the changing of the seasons, especially watching his crops mature from seeding to reaping the harvest. An avid curler, Rae also enjoyed fishing and bowling. He will be remembered for his kind heart. In his own unobtrusive and often anonymous ways, Rae would always help out when he saw friends, family and neighbours in need. It seemed that his motto in life was always, "Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you". Rae was predeceased by his parents, Matthew and Marion Thompson; his brothers, Kenneth (in infancy), Paul (at age 16) and Robert "Bob"; his sisters, Margaret Davidson, Velma Prokopishin and Carol Ann Mattis; his brothers-in-law, Peter Prokopishin and Wendell Haubrich. Rae is survived by his brothers, Gerald (Shirley) of Sherwood Park, AB, Jim (Evelyn) of Lethbridge, AB and Wilf (Jean) of Prince George, BC; his sisters, Jean (Ken) Paxman of Colgate, SK, Merle (Garry) Froehlich of Kelowna, BC, Lyla (Mike) Prokopishin of Calgary, AB and Doreen Haubrich of Esterhazy, SK; his sister-in-law, Mabel Thompson; his brother-in-law, Roy Davidson and a special friend, Edna Holland. Rae will also be lovingly remembered by his 28 nieces and nephews, 54 great nieces and great nephews - he was looking forward to meeting the next generation of great-great nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 from the Saltcoats Community Hall with Reverend Walter Farquharson officiating. The organist, Ruth Datema and members of the Saltcoats United Church Choir and friends, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, "Just As I Am", "How Great Thou Art" and "For the Fruit of all Creation". A private family cremation committal will take place at a later date. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie's Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, SK
