Mary Evelyn Roberts

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Mary Evelyn Roberts announce the passing of their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, Yorkton, SK.   She was 91 years of age. Mary was born on January 23, 1924 in the Killaly District of Saskatchewan. She attended Marwin School, near Bangor, SK. After she completed her education, Mary worked in the Saltcoats area where she met Wesley Roberts. They were married on October 17, 1944. Mary and Wes made their home on the farm near Saltcoats and were blessed with seven children. They continued to farm on the family farm until 1981, when they retired to the town of Bredenbury. After Wes' death in November 2004, Mary moved to The Heritage Manor in Churchbridge, SK in April of 2005. Failing health forced a move in August of 2009, when Mary became a resident of the Gladstone Seniors Residence in Yorkton. In December of 2009, Mary fell and broke her leg, and upon release from the hospital, she spent a short time recovering in St. Paul's Lutheran Home in Melville before transferring to the Weber House at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home where she resided until five days before her passing. Family meant the world to Mary. She was always knitting or crocheting some item for the children, grandchildren and in later years the great-grandchildren. Family gatherings were important to her and her home was always open to family and friends. It didn't matter how many people suddenly turned up, she always had plenty to feed everyone. There was always room for overnight guests and Mary was always helping others no matter how busy she was. In and outside her home was always an abundance of beautiful flowers and plentiful garden. Mary was active in both the communities of Bredenbury and Saltcoats. She attended Senior Centres in both towns and loved to play cards and bingo every chance she got. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Wes; infant son, Harvey; parents, Frank and Sophie Thiele; brothers, Ben, Edward, Walter and Ewald. She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Audrey (Tom) of Davidson, SK, Dolores (Bob) of Regina, SK, Irene of Saltcoats, SK, Norm (Glenys) of Saltcoats, SK, Dave (Joan) of Bredenbury, SK and Elaine (Wade) of Lumsden, SK; her grandchildren, Karen of Saskatoon, SK,  Kim (JR) of Radisson, SK, Cory (Tammy) of Regina, SK, Tracy (Scott) of Fort Qu'Appelle, SK, Mark (Niki) of Calgary, AB, Sarah (Mike) of Yorkton, SK, Cindy (Tom) of Yorkton, SK, Dustin (Crystal) of Regina, SK, Michael (Pam) of Swift Current, SK, Kris of Regina, SK and Ryan of Lumsden, SK. Mary also leaves to mourn her passing 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ann and Helen; two brothers, Ferdinand (Mildred) and Ernest (Marlene) as well as numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many good friends. A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, July 4, 2015 from Saltcoats United Church in Saltcoats, SK with Reverend Walter Farquharson officiating. The organist, Ruth Datema and members of the Saltcoats United Church Choir (and friends), led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, "Abide With Me", "Great Is Thy Faithfulness", "How Great Thou Art" and "Shall We Gather at the River". The readers were Dolores Wilcox and Journey Wilcox. Dolores also shared a poetic tribute in her mother's memory. Words of tribute and eulogy were shared by Mary's granddaughter, Karen Waterhouse. The Cremation Committal followed in the Saltcoats Community Cemetery with Mary's son, Norm Roberts serving as the urn bearer. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie's Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, SK.
