Dorothy Avonne Porter was born on January 13, 1923 in Moose Jaw, SK, the daughter of Thomas and Kathleen (nee Grant) Gibson. "Dot", as she was known to friends and family, completed her Grade 12 in Yorkton, SK. She furthered her education to train as a secretary and gained employment in Ottawa, ON during the war years. Dorothy returned to Yorkton after the war, where she met Garvin Porter and they were married on November 22, 1945. In 1947, the young couple moved to Garvin's hometown of Saltcoats where they opened a business together, "Porter's Plumbing & Heating". They raised their six children in the Saltcoats Community.Dorothy loved flowers and gardening. She enjoyed baking and spent many hours making lovely meals for her family. Knitting was another pass time that Dorothy enjoyed and the children always had homemade slippers and afghans for the cold winter months. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Kathleen and one brother, Don. She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory, her children, Don (Pat) of Big River, SK, Blair (Betty) of Cochrane, AB, Scott (Bonnie) of Big River, SK, Lori Kozmech of Yorkton, SK, Tim of Yorkton, SK and Jocelyn (Don) Frey of Cochrane, AB; her eleven grandchildren, Graeme (Maggie), Geoff (Shaye), Amber (Joe), Hudson, Meghan (Clayton), Tanis (Cole), Travis, Dustin (Marissa), Krista, Kaitlyn and Camille and five great-grandchildren, Emma, Lela and Nevaya, Reagan and Amelia. Dorothy also leaves to mourn her passing her brother, Gerry (Tud) Gibson of Nanoose Bay, BC, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many good friends. A Memorial Service was held on Thursday, January 22, 2015 from the Chapel of Christie's Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Kathy Novak serving as the Funeral Celebrant. Dorothy's granddaughters, Tanis Kozmech and Kaitlyn Frey shared words of tribute and eulogy on behalf of the family. The Piper, Sheila MacDonald played "Amazing Grace" as a processional and "Dark Isles" as the recessional. A special taped music selection was "Softly and Tenderly" as sung by Alan Jackson. The Urn Bearer was Dorothy's son, Don Porter. A private family cremation committal will take place in the Saltcoats Town Cemetery at a later date.
