Lois Ruth (Propp) Owen. It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ruth Owen on January 9, 2014. Ruthie was born April 29, 1936 in Rabbit Lake, SK, to Reverend Alexander and Lillian Propp. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Yorkton, SK. Ruth is predeceased by her parents Reverend Alexander Propp and Lillian Propp; her sister Eileen Propp; and her brother Donald Propp. Ruth attended Yorkton Collegiate Institute for her high school years and upon graduation enrolled in the Saskatoon City Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1957. She leaves her loving memory to be cherished by her husband of 55 years, Wendell Owen, Saskatoon; daughters Lori Gervais (Denny), Calgary, AB; Gwen Dawson (David), Calgary, AB; Maureen Sutherland (Gord Jeffrey), Saskatoon, SK; and son David Owen (Kristina), Edmonton, AB as well as 10 grandchildren: Mark and Michael Gervais; Megan, Kirsten and Cole Dawson; Derek, Emily and Maggie Sutherland; Ellie and Thomas Owen; and numerous loving family members and friends. At the tender age of 15, Ruth met the love of her life, Wendell. A courtship ensued and Wendell and Ruth celebrated their love and were married on June 7, 1958 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Yorkton, SK, officiated by her father. Ruth and Wendell started their married life together in Saskatoon. Ruthie worked for the Saskatoon City Hospital as a registered nurse. This vocation was her passion and she excelled at it. Ruthie's years on the obstetrics ward at City Hospital and later continuing on at Royal University Hospital were the happiest of her career. She loved being "the baby nurse" and we were told on so many occasions that Ruthie was a welcome sight on the ward for so many expectant moms. Her calm demeanor and twinkling blue eyes helped so many people. She was small, but she was mighty. Ruthie's love for her family knew no bounds. She was so proud of her children and grandchildren. Her humour, love and wit were but a small part of who she was. She was the ultimate hostess and cook and many happy family suppers were celebrated at Wendell and Ruthie's home. Softly within the shadows there came a gentle call, with farewells left unspoken you quietly left us all. The Funeral Service was held at Knox United Church, 838 Spadina Crescent East, Saskatoon, on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Paul's Hospital Palliative Care Unit or the Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation. Email condolences may be sent to [email protected]. Arrangements have been entrusted to SASKATOON FUNERAL HOME. 306-244-5577.
