George Frederick Nussbaumer was born in Yorkton on November 13, 1942 to Fritz and Margaret (nee Hood) Nussbaumer. George was raised on the family farm and attended school in the Eden district. He continued his education in Yorkton at the Yorkton Collegiate. During his younger years, George was an active sports enthusiast playing football in high school and fastball until his late 30's. At the age of 18 George decided to enroll in the R.C.M.P. and attended training at Depot in Regina, SK. Upon completion of his training he was stationed in Vancouver, B.C. where he met his wife, Arlene Sands. They were soon transferred to Ottawa where George joined the Musical Ride. Following his two-year North American tour George and Arlene, along with their first son, David, returned to Cranbrook B.C. where Ward and Dana were later born. George was then transferred back to the lower mainland where he and his family lived in Port Coquitlam, BC. The majority of his career was spent working in the lower mainland in various detachments including Burnaby, Richmond and Maple Ridge. George's attention to detail and strong work ethic allowed for him to receive special training as a negotiator for the SWAT team, homicide detective and member of the R.C.M.P. dive team. He was promoted several times throughout and retired as a Seargent in Yorkton, SK. During his career in the RCMP George always had a hand in the family farm back in Saskatchewan. He would often use his holiday time to help out with seeding and harvest. In 1981 George was transferred to Yorkton and actively began his farming career. After 28 years with the force George retired and started a second career with Sask Crop Insurance Corporation as the manager of the audit division. Despite having a demanding job, George was a devoted family man who made time to coach his children's sports teams, take camping trips, and instill a strong work ethic in his family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and family gatherings. He also enjoyed gardening and kept a large plot on the farm where he always planted enough to share. George was very active in his community and volunteered for many years with Ducks Unlimited, the Yorkton Exhibition Association as well as the Salvation Army's Christmas Kettle campaign which George believed to be a worthy charity and he genuinely enjoyed the opportunity to visit with all the people he knew during the Christmas Season. George was diagnosed with cancer in 2001, and in 2003 he was given only months to live. For reasons unknown George fought and had an additional 9 years of life, which enabled him to spend quality time with his family, continue to farm, travel the world and spend his winters in Puerto Vallarta. Predeceased by his parents, Fritz and Margaret Nussbaumer, and his in-laws, Harry and Louise Sands; George leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Arlene; son, David (Shelley) and their children, Vanessa and Rory; son, Ward (Glenda) and their sons, Ben and Ryan; and daughter, Dana (Brian Soke) and their children, Shelby, Zachary and Joshua; his brother, Bill (Brenda) Nussbaumer and sister-in-law, Valerie Skemp, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral Services were held on Thursday, January 9, 2014 from the Chapel of Christie's Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK. with Reverend Walter Farquharson officiating. George's long time friend, Dave Farrell shared words of tribute and eulogy. The organist, Carla Laycock, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, "Amazing Grace" and "For the Fruit of all Creation". A special taped music selection, "Angels Among Us" by Alabama was played as a recessional. George's grandchildren, Vanessa and Rory Nussbaumer, Ben and Ryan Nussbaumer, Shelby, Zachary and Joshua Soke served as the urn bearers. The cremation committal will take place in the R.C.M.P.
