Ruth Matheson was born on April 6, 1921 in Yorkton, SK, the daughter of Teresa (nee Nagy) and Joseph Parrott. Raised in Yorkton, Ruth attended Burke School and graduated from the Yorkton Collegiate Institute. Her strong spirit was enhanced by growing up with eleven siblings, seven brothers, Arthur, Frederick, Charles, John, Edwin, William and Gerald and four sisters, Edna, Laura, Helen and Florence. After graduation Ruth worked as a nurses' aide at the Sanatorium in Prince Albert before returning to Yorkton. On August 12, 1944, Ruth married Grant Ewen Matheson, son of Hildur Marie and Alexander (Sandy) Matheson. Two years later, daughter Carol Lynn was born. Grant was employed with the CPR while Ruth worked at the Post Office and then spent 28 years with the Unemployment Insurance Office as a Claims Advisor and Manager. Ruth was also involved with Brownies and Girl Guides for some years as well as member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church Altar Guild. She loved gardening, sewing, needlepoint, knitting and interior decorating - all areas that highlighted her creativity and natural eye for colour, scale and style. Ruth was an excellent bridge player, enjoyed entertaining, was a great cook and set a beautiful table. She was widowed early in life when Grant died in 1980, but blessed with the arrival six months later of grandson, Alexander Colin. Prior to Grant's passing, the couple travelled in Canada, the British Isles and Western Europe (Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and France). Upon retirement she continued to see the world, United States (New York City, Florida, New Orleans, California, Hawaii and Alaska), Asia (Japan, Shanghai, Beijing, the Great Wall of China and Hong Kong) and the Middle East (Jordan, Israel, Egypt). She also made annual visits to Ottawa to visit her daughter and family. For the past ten years, Ruth has enjoyed her suite at the Bentley Senior's Residence - the activities, special events, important friends and wonderful staff. Throughout her live, Ruth was proud of her independence, self reliance, determination, hard work and satisfaction in a job well done. In addition to her daughter, Carol and grandson, Alex Worobey, her loss is felt by her only surviving sibling, Florence Pawluck; nieces, Louise (Rob) Heinrich and Teresa (Darryl) Louis; sisters-in-law, Lorna (Edwin) Parrott and Betty (Gerald) Parrott and their respective families as well as many long time friends and neighbours. A Service to Celebrate Ruth's life was held on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 from the Chapel of Christie's Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Reverend Luanne Hrywkiw officiating. The organist, Judy Berg, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, "Abide With Me", "How Sweet The Hour of Closing Day" and "Softly and Tenderly". The Cremation Committal followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Carol Worobey serving as the urn bearer. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie's Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.
