Merle Louise Larson

Merle Louise Larson (nee Hall) was born on November 23, 1943 in Yorkton, SK, the daughter of Fred and Louise Hall. She grew up on the family farm with three brothers, Warren and Graham who were twins and Earl who was Merle's twin brother. Merle completed her education at Yorkton Collegiate and then furthered her education in business and commerce. In February of 1963, Merle met the love of her life Rueben Larson. After a brief courtship, Merle and Rueben were united in marriage on January 4, 1964 at Westview United Church. They were the first couple to be married in this church. Merle and Rueben were blessed with four children, Todd (1964), Trent (1968), Terry (1970) and Lana (1980). Merle loved going to her children's activities. Whether it be boy scouts and cadets, football, softball and track meets, Merle was always the loudest fan in the crowd cheering on her children. She was the same fan for her grandchildren, Merle was always there and rarely ever missed a hockey or soccer game. Merle started her employment with the Department of Agriculture in 1961 and retired from there in 1996. After retirement, Merle rediscovered her farming roots as she and Rueben purchased the family farm west of Saltcoats from his parents. Merle loved the farm, she loved all her animals, flowers and spending time with her grandchildren teaching them how to garden and how to have compassion for animals. In 2001, Merle and Rueben moved back to Yorkton and she came out of retirement and started work at Walmart in the fabric department. Merle loved this job, as she had a passion for sewing, knitting and crocheting. Merle established many friendships at Walmart, through fellow employees and customers. Merle retired for the last time in 2013 and spent her days at home, crafting, gardening, baking and being the best hockey Grandma to Jaxon in the winters, following him to the rink and cheering him on. Merle had a passion for cooking and baking, she made the best buns around. Every time she entered them in the Saltcoats or Yorkton fair, she was sure to take first place. Merle loved cooking for her family and recently made the comment to Rueben that she has made her family 48 Christmas suppers. Merle had a passion for gardening, she had beautiful flower beds and her yard always looked pristine. Merle enjoyed  decorating her house for every occasion. She had a love for Elvis and an extensive collection to show for it, which made it very easy to shop for her. Merle and Rueben went on a dream vacation in 1989 and toured Graceland. Merle was looking forward to going back to Vegas in October with her Granddaughters to see some Elvis impersonators. Merle passed her time in the winter by faithfully watching curling, knitting, crocheting and waiting for June to arrive so she could finally watch her precious Roughriders play. Merle would cheer so hard from home, jumping up and shouting at the TV "Go..Go - Go!". Merle also had the same enthusiasm when she would attend games in person, always one of the loudest fans in the crowd. Merle had many pride and joys in her life, next to her children and husband, Merle loved being a Grandma. Merle loved her Chocolate lab dogs Cocoa and after Cocoa's passing, Mya. They were great companions to Merle when Rueben was on the road trucking. Merle enjoyed spending time out at Lake of the Prairies at the cabin, fishing and entertaining friends and family who would stop in for a coffee and leave with a full tummy. Many people made the comments that you never left Merle's place hungry. Merle was predeceased by her father, Frederick Hall in 1968; her mother, Louise Hall in 1987; her brother, Warren in 1999; her twin brother, Earl in 2001 and brother Graham in 2015; her parents-in-law, Gerald Larson in 1999 and Elva Larson in 2007. Merle leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory, her husband of 52 years, Rueben; four children, Todd (Mona) of Okotoks, AB, Trent of Saltcoats, SK, Terry (Rhona) of Fort McLeod, AB, Lana (James) of Yorkton, SK; six Grandchildren, Shelby (Sonny), Tori (Evan), Taylor, Darci, Kendra and Jaxon; her beloved fur baby Mya, as well as numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends who were all near and dear to her heart.
