Dora Hnatuik was born on September 1, 1921 in the Theodore District of Saskatchewan, the daughter of Kostyn and Anastasia Dwernychuk. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in the district. On November 25, 1939, Dora was united in marriage to Metro Hnatuik. They farmed in the Buchanan district and later moved to Bredenbury, where they farmed and raised their family. Dora was a very hard working farm wife and mother and a true "home maker" - she welcomed everyone into her home and no one ever left hungry or thirsty. Her talents in the kitchen were appreciated by not only her family and friends, but also by the threshing crews and the occasional hobo that came off the train in Bredenbury. She grew a large garden - friends and family often joked that it was big enough to feed all of Bredenbury! One of her stories she told often was about milking cows and selling the milk for 10 cents a quart. She enjoyed "find a word" puzzles and crocheting - especially dish cloths which were her gift of choice for anyone who had been kind to her. After the passing of Metro, Dora remained in Bredenbury until 2011 when she was moved into the care home in Esterhazy. Eventually she became a resident of the Yorkton & District Nursing Home. Dora will be remembered for her feisty-ness, and the way that she called things exactly as she saw them; she had no tolerance for any drama or craziness around her. Dora will also be remembered for her immense love and devotion to her family. Dora was predeceased by her parents; husband, Metro in 1989; infant son, Darcy Michael, in 1963; brothers and sisters, son-in-law, Ed in 2009. She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory, four children, Irene Badowich, Alice (Valentine) Schuster, Florence (Keith) Welch and Allan (Sandra) Hnatuik; 12 grandchildren: Carrie, Sherry, Rob, Deb, Rick, Ron, Frank, Cori, Dan, Terry, Brett and Lacie; 23 great-grand-children; two sisters, Anne Brezinski and Helen (Nestor) Marianchuk and brother, Mike (Amy) Dwernychuk as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many good friends. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, November 17, 2012 from the Chapel of Christie's Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Reverend Walter Farquharson officiating. The organist, Lorne Neal, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, "Now Thank We All Our God", "Would You Bless our Homes and Families" and "In The Garden". Following a time for family tributes, a special taped music selection of "How Great Thou Art" as sung by Elvis Presley was played. The recessional music was also taped music, "Too Old to Die Young" as sung by Moe Bandy. The Interment Service followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Dora's grandsons, Robert Schuster, Rick Welch, Ron Schuster, Frank Badowich, Dan Badowich, Terry Welch and Brett Hnatuik serving as casket bearers. Dora's granddaughters, Carrie Lewchuk, Sherry Bayliss, Deb Bulitz, Cori Smithen and Lacie Hnatuik were named as honourary pallbearers.
