The family of Jack Hawka sadly announces his passing on March 18, 2014 at Yorkton Regional Health Centre at 81 years of age. Jack was predeceased by his parents David and Anna (Gullason) Hawka, parents-in-law Peter and Mary Makowetski, and brother-in-law Stan Kowalyshyn. Jack is survived by his loving wife Iris; children Jacquie (Bob) Barton and Sheldon (Gwendi); grandsons Cameron (Susan) and Wade (Kelsey) Barton; great-grandchildren Cole and Addison Barton; sisters Allie Hawka and Bette (Barry) Johb; sisters-in-law Jean Kowalyshn and Frances (Mel) Rasmussen; brother-in-law Allan Makowetski; nieces and nephews and special friends. Jack was born in Canora, SK on December 13, 1932. He began his education in Canora and in later years attended school in Nelson and Slocan, BC. Following high school graduation, Jack returned to his prairie roots in Yorkton. His first job in Yorkton was with Hi-Way Transport. In 1957 Jack began employment with Atomic Transfer that led to a long and satisfying career. He was a dedicated employee and was awarded Terminal Manager of the Year several times. A career highlight was the opening of the new terminal in 1978. Jack spent many personal hours cutting the lawn and planting flowers and shrubs to enhance the new terminal. He was proud when Atomic was awarded the City of Yorkton Best Industrial Grounds numerous years. Jack was involved in his community. He served on the vestry of Holy Trinity Anglican Church. He also served as President of York Lake Golf Club from 1987-1989, director of the City Chamber of Commerce from 1984-1989 and member of the City Planning Committee for several years. He belonged to the Rotary Club and enjoyed the fellowship and projects. He served as president in 1985-1986. He was recognized by his fellow Rotarians with several awards: Rotarian of the Year for 1988-89 and 1996-97; Fundraiser of the Year 1986-1987; Dedication to Service and Special Projects 1988. Jack was devoted to his family. He met the love of his life, Iris, in 1956 and they were married on June 8, 1957. He was a wonderful father to his children and an amazing grandpa to his grandsons. He was a caring father-in-law, son, son-in-law and brother. He was patient and kind and generous with his talents and time. Humour was important to Jack and he loved to make people laugh! He was a man of few words but his actions clearly demonstrated his love. He will be forever loved and missed. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, April 11, beginning at 7:00pm at Holy Trinity Anglican Church. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 12 at 2:00pm from Holy Trinity Anglican Church. The interment will follow in the Yorkton Memorial Gardens.
