Carol Lillian Hastie was born on September 20, 1926 on the family farm in the Willowbrook area. She was the fourth of five children born to Clifford and Gladys (nee Ball) Meays. She was raised on the farm and attended Silver Willow School then Yorkton Collegiate for her final two years of high school. She then attended Normal School in Regina to become a teacher. After World War II ended, she was home on the farm for the holidays when she met a young Fred Hastie who was digging a dugout for her father. The story goes he took her for a ride on his bulldozer and they soon became inseparable. Carol and Fred were married in Yorkton on July 23, 1947. After living in Jedburgh, Theodore and Melville, they moved to Yorkton in 1954 where they stayed. They had three daughters, Donna and Cheryl in Theodore and Sandy in Yorkton. When Sandy started school Carol returned to the work force as a medical receptionist. She retired after many years of service with Drs. Houston, Crossley and Daunt. She always said she loved her job. She was just as passionate and dedicated to her family and with her long-time affiliation with the Yorkton Chapter of the Order Eastern Star. She was also an active fund-raiser for cancer. Camping was a favourite pastime of the family and there were countless happy times with friends at campgrounds throughout Saskatchewan. After retirement Carol and Fred spent many happy winters in Mesa, AZ and enjoyed their southern community, making new friends from Canada and United States. She was an active person in her own right, often bowling, line-dancing and walking. She had a beautiful soul and a kind spirit and was loved by all who knew her. After Fred passed away in 2009 things were never the same and she began to struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She retained her love of family and friends, however, and a shining spirit. For the last three years she resided at St. Paul's Lutheran Home in Melville. Carol passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2015. She was 88 years of age. Carol was predeceased by her parents, her brother Harold and two sisters Joyce (Joseph) Urbanoski and Olive and her beloved husband Fred. She leaves to mourn and to cherish her memory daughters Donna (Peter) Luk of Toronto, Cheryl Irvine (Mike Hebert) of Okanagan Falls and Sandy (Rick) Vaughan Hastie of Yorkton, grandchildren Dean (Rochelle) McBride of Sundre, AB, Dylan (Terry) McBride of Calgary, Darcy (Danielle) McBride of Edmonton, Peter Luk Jr. of Toronto and Jennifer Luk of Hamilton, two great-grandchildren Brendan and Megan McBride of Sundre, her brother Ralph Meays and many nieces and nephews, as well as many friends. The funeral service was held on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 from Westview United Church in Yorkton with Rev. Deborah Smith officiating. Daughter Sandy gave a tribute on behalf of the family. Organist, Laurel Teichroeb led members of the church choir and the congregation in the singing of the hymns 'In the Garden', 'How Great Thou Art', 'In the Quiet Curve of Evening' and 'Here I Am Lord'. The interment took place in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Dean, Dylan & Darcy McBride, Peter & Jennifer Luk, Mike Hebert & Rick Vaughan serving as the casket bearers.
