Edward (Ed) Chaban was born to Pauline (Pat) and Nicholas (Nick) Chaban on January 30, 1946. He was their only child and grew up in Canora, SK before moving to Yorkton for high school. After graduating, he attended SIAST in Moose Jaw. Ed met Laura (nee Teetaert) and they married on October 12, 1974, then settled in Yorkton to raise a family. Their twins, David and Bonnie, born on October 4, 1979, kept them busy in the community through Girl Guides and Boy Scouts. Whether it was camping, canoeing or biking, Ed was as involved in the activities as the kids. He supported his family by working at Gainers, then Western Grocers in Yorkton. This allowed the family to spend every summer weekend where Ed really wanted to be - the family cabin at Crystal Lake. It was his goal to build his retirement home and retire out the lake and that's exactly what he did. Ed was widowed in 2000 after Laura lost her battle with cancer. Some time after, Ed met Karen DeLong and on November 12, 2011 after many happy years of engagement, they were married. Ed retired when the warehouse closed in 2010 and he split his time between town and the lake. His new found freedom allowed him time to indulge in his love of classic cars and he was able to collect not one, but two classic convertibles that he had always wanted. Retirement gave Ed the time to participate in many of the activities he had always enjoyed, including curling in the winter and boating the summer. On Thursday, March 13, 2014, at the age of 68, surrounded by his family, Ed lost a valiant year-long battle with cancer. Ed was predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Pauline Chaban and his first wife, Laura (Teetaert) Chaban; his in-laws, Amiel and Jeanne Teetaert and his nephew, Brent Teetaert. He leaves to celebrate his life his wife, Karen DeLong; his children Bonnie Chaban and David (April) Chaban; his grandchildren, Lucas, Jace and Emersyn Chaban; his step-children, Steven and Chantelle DeLong; his in-laws, Walter (Linda) Teetaert, Judith Donaldson, David, Raymond and Leslie Shiner. A Memorial Service was held on Monday, March 17, 2014 from the Chapel of Christie's Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Pastor Steve Rosluk of First Baptist Church officiating. Tributes commemorating Ed and the wonderful relationships he had with his family were shared by his daughter-in-law, April Chaban and family friend, Dennis Nelson. Special taped music selections included "The Keeper of the Stars" by Tracy Byrd, "Daddy's Hands" by Holly Dunn and "Go Rest High on That Mountain" by Vince Gill. The Cremation Committal will take place in the Yorkton City Cemetery, Yorkton, SK at a later date. Donations in Ed's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church for their Sound System as tokens of remembrance. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie's Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.
