Arthur James (Jim) Barber

Arthur James (Jim) Barber of Springside, SK was born October 9, 1931. He was the third child and only son of five children born to Jack and Ina Barber. Jim was born on the family farm at Springside. During his childhood days, Jim helped with farming chores (milking cows, feeding chickens, etc.). He attended Springside School. Upon leaving school, he did harvesting and field work for some of the neighbours. In his early 20s, Jim left the farm and in the summer worked on the pipelines in Â鶹´«Ã½AVern Saskatchewan and in the winter travelled to Ontario to work at bush camps. In his spare time, Jim loved going to community dances and would catch the train to Theodore and Insinger with his buddies. He met Sharon Willis who later became his wife in 1958. Two years later his son, Nelson was born and his daughter, Lori, was born in 1962. Jim continued helping at the family farm, but was also a jack of all trades and worked at Korb Motors, Morris Rod-Weeder, a local telephone company and drove truck for Coca Cola in Yorkton. He also worked at the radar base in Orcadia and for Albert Barsi doing caterpillar work. In the early 60's, Jim took over the family farm and farming became his full-time job until he retired in 1998. While farming, he also drove grader for the Orkney Rural Municipality for two years. In 2008, Jim sold the farm and moved to the Town of Springside where he resided until his passing. Jim  was a member of the Legion, Lions and Wheat Pool Committee. His hobbies included snowmobiling, woodworking, golfing, fishing and hunting, reading, trapping and he was a darn good guitar player and yodeler. He also enjoyed Scottish Country dancing and evening card playing with family, friends and neighbours. Jim had a great sense of humor - he had a number of great sayings, some of which included:

         -    six of one and half a dozen of the other

         -    blind in one eye and can't see out of the other

         -    a blind man would be glad to see that

         -    We'll see.....
