Sturgis hunters and anglers acknowledged with awards

Sportsman club in Sturgis honoured its members for big game and fish entries.

STURGIS — The Sturgis Wildlife club presented its awards for the 2020 and 2021 seasons at its awards evening held in Sturgis on June 11.

“This is the first year that we were able to host and present our avid sportsmen and women with awards since the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak had forced us to be put on hold,” said Rob Wilcott, president.

The awards were originally scheduled to take place at the Sturgis Regional Park but the river overflowed and had flooded the park. The barbecue supper was very low key with only a few members in attendance.

Wilcott acknowledged the club’s executive members prior to presenting awards with the help of member Daniel Wasylenchuk. “The wildlife federation has a new underwriter for our insurance and a huge thank you to those who attended our antler measuring in December, The club has been pretty quiet the last few years but are hopefully we can return to some normalcy in the next year,” he concluded.

The awards portion was next with fish and big game awards presented to the 2020 season winners. Dwayne Pasiechnik won the men’s northern pike plaque for his entry that measured 13.11 pounds. Pasiechnik also received the men’s walleye award for his entry, 4.10 pounds.

Avery Masley won the junior women’s northern pike award for her entry, 14.14 pounds and Cole Masley won the junior men’s northern pike award, 9.10 pounds. Masley also won the junior men’s typical white-tailed deer award for his entry, measuring 123 and 3/8 inches.

In the big game awards, Bert Suknasky won the men’s moose award for his entry that scored 146 and 5/8 inches. Larry Skogen won the men’s pronghorn antelope award for his entry that scored 70 and 2/8 inches. Ken Sobothniski won the men’s typical mule deer award for his entry, 152 and 3/8 inches. Darren Krushen won the men’s typical white-tailed deer award for his entry, 170 and 0/8 inches. Bob Bartch won the men’s non-typical white-tailed deer award, 186 and 0/8 inches. Kaiden Masley won the junior men’s non-typical whitetail deer award for his entry that scored 151 and 7/8 inches.

In the 2021 awards portion, Elmar Vicente won the men’s typical white-tailed deer award for his entry, 172 and 6/8 inches. Cory Babiuk won the men’s non-typical white-tailed deer archery award for his entry, 171 and 7/8 inches. Anna Maria Wilcott took home the women’s typical white-tailed deer award, 109 and 3/8 inches. Brynn Babiuk won the junior women’s archery typical white-tailed deer award, 134 and 4/8 inches. Austin Bartch won the junior men’s non-typical white-tailed deer award, 160 and 7/8 inches. James Kalnicki won the men’s typical mule deer award, 156 and 0/8 inches. Kelly Masley captured the men’s non-typical mule deer award, 183 and 4/8 inches. Kaiden Masley won the junior men’s non-typical mule deer award, 185 and 7/8 inches. Carter Masley won the men’s typical elk award, 332 and 5/8 inches. Mason Babiuk was the winner of the junior men’s typical elk award, 209 and 4/8 inches. James Prekaski took the men’s moose award, with his entry measuring 143 and 7/8 inches.

In the 2021 fish awards, Betty Lou Skogen won the women’s northern pike award for her entry that weighed 15.5 pounds, Avery Masley won the junior women’s northern pike award for her entry, 16.13 pounds, Kaiden Masley won the junior men’s lake trout award for his entry that weighed 27.8 pounds, and Jacob Chupik won the junior men’s perch award with his entry of 1.9 pounds.
