OUTLOOK - Two local girls are looking back on the time of their life, having taken part in a national event centered on lacrosse.
For the first time ever, Sask Lacrosse and the Team Sask Lacrosse program sent a team to the U19 Women's Field Lacrosse National Championship, also known as the Jenny Kyle Cup, which was held from August 2 to 5 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The event showcased Canada's top female field lacrosse athletes as they competed for the title of National Champions.
Playing on the team were Addisyn Vanghel and Morgan Chabot, two young players from Outlook.
Both athletes got their start in the sport in 2018, playing in a co-ed Havoc Field Lacrosse league in Saskatoon that was predominantly made up of boys. For the past three years, Vanghel and Chabot have prepared for this event with other females from across Saskatchewan, attending a number of ID camps and local training sessions.
Prior to the nationals event in Winnipeg, both athletes joined their fellow teammates in Regina at the Premier Lacrosse League camp to learn from professional lacrosse players and to prepare for the Manitoba competition.
Unlike regular field lacrosse, which requires full gear and pads to participant in the rough and tumble sport, women's lacrosse gear consists of only goggles and a stick, making it unique and distinct in its requirements.
Seeing how the Saskatchewan roster was making its debut on the lacrosse nationals stage, consisting of a team of girls that had only ever practiced the game, the experience was very much a learning one for the squad. Despite losses to teams from Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and BC, it was said that the Saskatchewan team showed noticeable sportsmanship and impressive athleticism.
The squad from BC won the 1st Place championship, with Alberta and Ontario winning silver and bronze medals, respectively.
