New principal for Lucky Lake School this fall

New arrival comes on the heels of retirement for current principal, Terry Hall.

LUCKY LAKE - A new face will be in the halls of Lucky Lake School this coming fall, as Jennifer Young will be the school's new Principal starting in the 2024-25 school year.

“Jennifer comes to Sun West with dynamic skills and impressive experience in a range of key areas,” stated Sun West Director of Education Vicki Moore, “and we are very pleased to have her join our team.”

Ms. Young holds a number of degrees and diplomas from the University of Manitoba. These are an Advanced Bachelor of Arts in History and Psychology (2006), Post-Baccalaureate Diplomas in Education (2008 and 2009), a Bachelor of Education in Social Studies and English (2011) and a Masters in Education in Inclusive Special Education, Educational Administration, Foundations and Psychology.

Ms. Young started her teaching career at Victory School in Winnipeg and taught elementary grades there as well as at Gretna Elementary School in Gretna and Emerson Elementary School in Emerson, both in Manitoba, between 2011 and 2019.

From 2019 to 2022, Ms. Young was the Learning Support (Resource) Teacher for Kindergarten to Grade 6 at Dalhousie School in Winnipeg. In this capacity she often served as Acting Principal or Acting Vice-Principal and was responsible for management and support for about 29 Educational Assistants.

Ms. Young was the Coordinator of the School and Community Support Unit with the Manitoba Department of Education and Early Childhood Learning from September 2022 until January 2024. Her role their included helping to develop policy in several areas and she managed and mentored Curriculum and Assessment Consultants and Program and Policy Analysts with the Department Inclusion Support Branch.

She is currently a Senior Social Studies, Biology and Foods teacher at Grand Trunk High School in Evansburg, Alberta.

In addition, Ms. Young has been President of the Manitoba Association of Resource Teachers, a member of the Manitoba Student Services Inclusion Consultation Committee and has been a presenter at many educational conferences and events.

“I am excited to embark on this new journey as the principal of Lucky Lake School,” stated Ms. Young. “I look forward to fostering a supportive and innovative learning environment for all students and staff,” she added.

Young's arrival comes on the heels of the retirement of principal Mrs. Terry Hall. A retirement party was held for Hall on June 4 at the school, where there were plenty of laughs and a few tears as students wished Hall well with songs, skits, and poetry.
