The Matrix Global Study- 2001

Conclusions: Increased retention of top performing staff More positive work environment Increase revenue Improve customer satisfactionListening - One of the Core Coaching SkillsBrief definition of listening is, "hearing something with thoughtful attention".

Examples: "Mmm.... say more." "What I heard you say is ____." "What does that mean?" "What I am hearing is ____." "Tell me if I'm hearing this right"

How can you let people know you are listening to them? What clues do you use, or observed in others who are good listeners? Some clues that work include, but are not limited to the following: Eye contact and/or non-verbal acknowledgment, such as nodding. Repeating back, in your own words what the person has said, (paraphrasing). This demonstrates understanding and getting it. Asking questions for more information shows you are listening. Focus on them, not your watch, other people, the phone, etc.

When you use these clues, what does it do for the other person? It proves you are listening, genuinely shows interest, shows respect, provides validation to the person and enhances relationships - a Bonus.

Perhaps at times, you are stopped on your way somewhere and don't have the time to focus and really listen to a person. What can you do? Here are some options: Pick a location and ask them to meet you later. Make an appointment and keep it. Explain that you want to take the time to fully listen and now is not a good time for you. OR Delay what you are doing and focus on them.

Most of us are poor listeners. We have to ears and one mouth for a reason. In closing, your homework assignment is to provide me and/or Yorkton This Week with answers to the following questions:1) What is it like to be listened to and really heard by someone? What happens when that occurs?2) What happens when you do not feel listened to and heard?Next week I will answer the questions, referencing the skill of listening.
