The Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) continued with its tradition of weekend volleyball tournaments in the month of September with its second set of games since school began.
The school's junior girls team hosted and the Gr. 9 team played in it as well.
The Sacred Heart girls team was among the competition.
Included from out of town were Churchbridge, Balgonie, Estevan and Stockholm.
Coach of the host club Dee Dee Walker said one of the teams cancelled out forcing a re-make of the schedule.
"It's a weaker field but they were glad to attend," she said of the teams that did make it.
Her team has only played a couple exhibition games so far, against Churchbridge and Stockholm and her team wound up doing "fairly well" considering that playing time isn't what it should be for a young team.
"We're doing fairly well but most of the teams here are Gr. 9 and under. That's the problem," she said halfway through the tournament, which saw her team advance to the finals match, where they fell in the last set.
She said there is much work to be done in a very short period of time, although the team's serving is better than even she expected.
"We definitely need working on their basic skills," she said after their third game of the tournament. The junior girls finished second following the round robin.
Walker said it was turning out to be fun.
She said she was liking how things were going.
"The atmosphere of the girls. It hasn't been too bad (considering) there's only been a few practices."
Following their one and only time hosting a tournament in their own gym, the team will be spending most of the rest of the season away from the orange building; they will be making stops this season in Churchbridge, Balgonie, Roblin and Luther College in Regina where Walker said they will be in for a test playing against senior teams.
She says the season would likely conclude at that point as there are no district tournaments for this age group.
"It should be good for the girls," she said.
It will allow them to "work on skills, play their best", she adds.
Her squad stood out at home over the weekend, displaying some of the finest serving, she notes.
"The serving has been good. I'm very impressed with the serving."
